If you’ve not heard of or seen “Orange Is The New Black”, you might have been living under a rock. Anyone can easily testify to the seven seasons of intrigue, that is the series.
For the cave people, let me give you a quick rundown:
Orange Is the New Black (OITNB) is an American comedy-drama web television series based on Piper Kerman’s memoir, Orange Is the New Black: My Year in a Women’s Prison (2010), about her experiences at FCI Danbury, a minimum-security federal prison. The series depicts the lives of different types of women living in a prison and the struggles and realities of those women prior to and during their jail term and it was quite good.
Let’s not lose track however, the subject of this write up is based on one of the characters in the series: Suzanne ‘Crazy Eyes’, who is intelligent, but lacking in social skills. Her mental illness in the movie made her prone to emotional outbursts, hallucinations, and delusions. She was a sight to watch, and it was nice to see her portrayal of natural hair.
This role I am talking about was effectively played by Actress Uzo Aduba, who received an Emmy Award recognition in both the comedy and drama genres from the same show.
A graduate of Classical voice from Boston University, she was born in the United States to Nigerian parents. She also garnered recognition for her role in 2003 Translations of Xhosa.
She once publicly shared the memory of having a conversation with her mother and wanting to switch her Igbo Nigerian name “Uzoamaka” to Zoe to enable others to pronounce it well. Her mother replied and said if the long and abstract names from other nationalities could be pronounced well by those people, then they could learn to pronounce hers as well.
That story went on to show how strongly her Nigerian heritage was made integral to her identity over the years.
Her award profile includes winner of:
– Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series(2015)
– Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series(2015)
– Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series(2016)
– Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series(2016)
– Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series(2017)
All for the Orange Is The New Black series.
What A Star!
Uzo Aduba seemed to fall into public view with her role in this series and hasn’t backed down ever since.
We look forward to seeing what she brings to our tables next and we trust it’s going to be as awesome as usual.
